Birch Road level crossing - remains of - on the Cheshire Lines Committee's Glazebrook East Junction to Skelton Junction Line. Closed to passengers in 1964, it remained open as a through route until 1983 (I did it on a railtour) when the Ship Canal bridge required extensive repair work. The line here was open until the mid 1990s to serve Partington Refinery, the rails are in place under the road surface but most of the remaining rails have gone. Beyond the trees to the right is Manchester United's Carrington training ground.
