Saturday 30 March 1985. Hertfordshire Railtours' "The Grand National Special" has arrived in the excursion platform at Aintree, and the locomotive, 47540, is running round the train; it is about to be attached to the south end of the stock for the return journey. I was on this train from Rugby. This is the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway's station; the Liverpool - Ormskirk - Preston electrified tracks pass through the platforms to the right. The route to this location was rather roundabout: from the Manchester - Liverpool LNWR line at Olive Mount Jn then Edge Lane Jn - Bootle Jn - Marsh Lane Jn - Sefton Jn. This is looking northwards from Park Lane overbridge; the disused Aintree Central station is a short distance to the left, but south of Park Lane.
