RENFE Class 594 DMU 594013 at Salamanca ready to work Media Distancia train MD18306, the 14:00 departure to Medina del Campo. This is one of only a small number of trains per day which call at the intermediate station Cantalapiedra: most bypass it on a significantly separate alignment.
The line from just west of Medina del Campo to Salamanca is unusual, being a "classic" broad gauge route but electrified at 25 kV 50 Hz. High speed trains can continue towards Madrid using the gauge changer at Medina del Campo (and which I will cover on my next trains), but there is a voltage change to the 3 kV dc used on most of the electrified broad gauge network to access Medina del Campo station. There may be no suitable dual voltage EMUs available to work this service, hence the use of a DMU "under the wires".
