The Barragem de Alqueva was completed in 2002 and impounds the River Guadiana. The resulting reservoir is the largest in Western Europe at 250 sq km. The dam is near Beja, Serpa and Moura. This view is of the hydro-electric power station which has a capacity of 520 MW. A pumped-storage facility is built-in so that the upper reservoir can be filled from the lower reservoir at times of low electricity demand.
