The railway line eastwards from Beja towards Moura opened in stages, reaching Serpa (later named Serpa-Brinches) in 1878. To connect the town of Serpa, 7 km away, to the line, a branch line was planned in the 1930s, including a triangular junction at the main line end. The branch line was never completed, but some of the infrastructure remains, including this bridge over the Ribeira do Enxoé about 600 m from the junction.
