Serpa is a large town in the Baixo Alentejo region of Portugal, dating back to Roman times, but was 7 km from the nearest railway station, at Serpa-Brinches on the Beja - Moura line (opened in stages between 1869 and 1902). Work stated on a connecting branch line in the 1930s but was never finished. The route into Serpa came across where this roundabout is now located, and until a few years ago the course could be seen as a cutting - now infilled.
