At Badajoz a cross-platform interchange was made between the arrival from Entroncamento, left, and the departure to Madrid, right. RENFE (Red Nacional de los Ferrocarriles Españoles, Spanish National Railways) class 334 diesel locomotives 334003+334004 will haul a Talgo set as train IC193/MD37393 to Madrid. This train has two train numbers because you can buy a cheaper MD (Media Distancia) fare for certain shorter journeys rather than the more expensive IC (InterCity) fare for longer journeys. I took this train as far as Mérida; it used the new high speed line most of the way, except that it used crossovers from the high speed line to the classic line and back again to call at Montijo station.
