When the Manchester Ship Canal was built in the early 1890s, it partly replaced and bypassed some sections of the River Irwell. An isolated section of the river has been retained at Irlam, near the Boat House Inn which can be seen to the left. Before the Ship Canal was built, the proprietor of the Boat House was required to provide boat and boatman for the ferry across the river here. This ferry was replaced by the nearby ferry over the Ship Canal when that was built; though that ferry has now also been disused for some years.
