2-car diesel unit 156 488, operated by Northern, is about to depart from Deansgate station platform 2 while working a Manchester to Liverpool Lime Street service via Warrington Central.
Three-state banner repeater signal MC461BR is indicating that signal MC461 is showing a green "clear" aspect. Preliminary Route Indicator signal MC461PRI is showing a left-pointing arrow to indicate that signal MC461 is showing a "position 1" route indicator "feather", i.e. the route is set towards Cornbrook and Warrington Central.
Platform 1 also has a Three-state banner repeater signal MC463BR, this is showing that signal MC463 is showing a red "Danger" aspect. MC463 has no route indicator, it can only be cleared for trains proceeding towards Water Street Jn, so no PRI is provided.
Signals MC461 and MC463 are out of sight from approaching trains, especially if trains are standing in the platforms, so these banner repeater and preliminary route indicator signals have been provided to give advance warning of the signals of the route ahead.
