Looking roughly southwards from the west bank of the Manchester Ship Canal. The viaduct is Ship Canal Railway Deviation No.5, opened in 1893 to take the Cheshire Lines Committee's railway over the Canal. The pre-1893 alignment was on this side of the viaduct. This route was opened by the Cheshire Lines Committee on 2 September 1873, forming their route between Manchester Central and Liverpool Central via Warrington Central.
