This is the A572 Newton Road (Lowton to Leigh) where the Great Central Railway routes from St Helens Central and from Wigan Central converged from the right. passing under the road to Lowton St Mary's station which was where the timber yard is on the left. Beyond Lowton St Mary's station the line continued to Glazebrook on the present Cheshire Lines Committee railway. The HS2 planned route passes under this road a short distance beyond the former railway underbridge.
