Astley level crossing on the Chat Moss Liverpool to Manchester line. Opened on 15 September 1830, this was the first inter-city railway in the world. Busy railway today, I'd had to wait for two trains before I could get across. This level crossing, which road and foot users have to operate themselves, connects Astley on the north side with Chat Moss itself on the south side. The signaller locks the gates before trains are allowed to pass; working to Warrington Power Box to the west and to Eccles signal box to the east.
