A little way to the north of Crown Street station, near the junction of Smithdown Lane and Minshull Street, is this ventilation shaft for the other long tunnel under Liverpool, Victoria Tunnel - which with Waterloo Tunnel was opened in 1849 to connect Edge Hill station with Waterloo Dock. The tunnel closed to traffic in 1972.
