On Saturday 30 March 1985, I travelled from Rugby on Hertfordshire Railtours' "The Grand National Special" from London Euston to Aintree. For many years race day traffic was so high that specials ran to three different stations at Aintree. By 1985 the only specials ran to the former Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway excursion platform at Aintree, alongside but not connected to the present station on the Liverpool - Ormskirk - Preston line. However there were still plenty of remains of the former lines and stations in the area, so the opportunity was taken to record these. Most of this was built on in the 1990s, and little is visible nowadays.
