Manchester Metrolink Oldham and Rochdale Line Construction Works

Photographs taken during 2011 and 2012 of the construction of the Manchester Metrolink tram route from Manchester to Oldham and Rochdale.

Largely built on the alignment of the former heavy rail route, the track has been completely relaid and new tram stops built. Approval for the route through Oldham town centre was delayed so the initial 2012 routing will be via the main line Mumps station area; this will be abandoned when the town centre route is opened on 2014.

At Rochdale the initial terminus will be in the railway station forecourt but an extension into the centre will open in 2014.

Public opening dates:-
Manchester Victoria to Oldham Mumps (Temporary): 13 June 2012
Oldham Mumps (Temporary) to Shaw & Crompton: 16 December 2012

The site of Oldham Mumps roundabout looking towards Mumps tram stop. The old railway line crossed the roundabout on two bridges, which have been removed. When the new tram route from Oldham Mumps on towards Rochdale is opened, due later in 2012, it will use the lower level route visible where the cars are crossing it. The new route through the town centre, due to open in 2014, diverges to the right here.

Oldham Mumps temporary tram stop, close to the original location of the heavy rail station which closed on 3 October 2009. The route to here from Manchester, behind the camera, is due to open during the first part on 2012, and test trams have already run over this section. The line beyond here, towards Rochdale, is due to open later in 2012. It is expected that this section and station will close completely in 2014 when the new Oldham town centre route is opened.
