The railway line eastwards from Beja towards Moura opened in stages: initially 20 km as far as Quintos; then a further 9 km to Serpa (later named Serpa-Brinches) in 1878. Opening east of here to Pias was in 1887, then finally to Moura in 1902. The line closed to passenger traffic in 1990, surviving for another 10 years for freight traffic.
