Taken from the footpath alongside the railway bridge over the River Mersey at Walton Old Jn, looking north towards Warrington. Now only two tracks wide, the river crossing here was four tracks wide for a period, as can be seen from the wider abutment. The existing pair to the left is the original alignment of the Grand Junction Railway, opened in 1837 between Birmingham and Warrington. The second bridge was added some time after 1850, then removed some time after 1894 when the building of the Ship Canal deviations meant that traffic in this area was somewhat reduced.
