Looking eastwards towards Flixton, the track in front is the original 1873 alignment of the Cheshire Lines Committee railway between Manchester Central and Liverpool Central via Warrington Central. This was replaced in 1893 by the track on the embankment to the right, which is Manchester Ship Canal Railway Deviation No.5, built by the Ship Canal company to take the railway over the canal.
