Taken from the footpath that runs alongside the railway over the River Mersey bridge, looking south-westwards. The two main running lines here are known as the Helsby Lines today, but the route here was originally built by the Grand Junction Railway (GJR), opened in 1837. The line rising slightly to the right is Manchester Ship Canal Railway Deviation No.2, climbing to meet Railway Deviation No.1 at the girder bridges over the Ship Canal and Acton Grange Junction. Straight on was the original pre-1893 GJR route towards Moore and Crewe, and the site of the original junction with the Birkenhead Joint Railway route towards Helsby and Chester.
